World Wetlands Day: Celebrating the Essential Role of Wetlands

World Wetlands Day is an international event raising awareness for the ecological values that wetlands provide and promoting the conservation and sustainable use of these valuable natural assets. It is celebrated each year on the 2nd February to coincide with the signing of the Ramsar Convention in Iran in 1971, which protects wetlands of international importance across the globe.

Australia has an impressive 65 wetlands of international importance which provide habitat for a diverse range of plants and animals, including some of our most threatened species.

Wetlands play an important role in keeping our landscapes and waterways healthy and productive enabling a range of industries to thrive. This year’s theme is 'Wetlands for our future: sustainable livelihoods' and has been chosen to demonstrate the vital role of wetlands for the future of humanity and specifically their relevance towards achieving the new United Nations Sustainable Development goals.

Ecology and Heritage Partners have been providing advice to clients about wetland values, design considerations and management strategies for over 10 years. We have extensive experience in the design and monitoring of artificial wetland habitat for the threatened Growling grass frog.

• Artificial wetland design for the Rockbank North Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) for Woodlea;
• Wetland design advice for the Donnybrook and Woodstock PSPs for Ranfurlie Developments;
• Preparation of an Ecological Management Plan for the Jerringot Wetlands, City of Greater Geelong;
• Contributing to the Index of Wetland Condition Project for the Arthur Rylah Institute; and,
• Preparing a Wetlands Strategy for the North East Catchment Management Authority.
